  Frankly, I would say to not engage with folks like that whatsoever. The best way to perform is to not play at all. People who spew ad hominen are not looking for a fantastic discussion. It is just outrage jockies, narcists searching for clout, keyboard warriors, or even trolls. Over time, I have found myself diverting more and more away from internet discussion and online communities because it is becoming quite bad for one's mental health. The tribalism, petty drama, and degeneration can be particularly taxing. Talking to individuals in communities that you enjoy outside of the internet like at conferences or team meet ups, is a fantastic way to make new positive connections with people and can permit you to express yourself without fear of how the"keyboardists" will react and judge you.
  
  1 thing I haven't seen commented on is that this strange aspect: it supposes that the character must be the exact same race as the participant. This premise is inherent all of the negative emotions.
