Group Overview

A name synonymous with the world of motion picture, AVM is the oldest active film production house in India. Founded by AV Meiyappan in 1946, this is one of the few active studios in Asia, with over 170 films in several Indian languages.

AVM has always been an institution that produces fascinating movies and has launched numerous prominent actors such as Sivaji Ganesan, Vyjanthimala, Kamal Haasan, T.R Mahalingam, Sivakumar and S.S Rajendran.

First set up in 1946 at Karaikudi, a small town in interior Tamil Nadu, the well known AVM Studios has since then grown by leaps and bounds. The studios moved to Chennai in 1948. In addition to the shooting floors, AVM Studios has recording, dubbing and a preview theatre with state of the art equipment. The complex also houses the latest facilities for production and post production processing.

As observed by Peter Lowe, a noted American film personality, AVM Studios is one of the five studios in the world which has been functioning without a break for over 60 years.

Hits like ‘Naam Iruvar’, ‘Andha Naal’ and the Prime Minister’s Gold medal winner ‘Hum Panchi Ek Dalke’ and several memorable feature films including ‘Samsaram Athu Minsaram’ which won the President’s Gold Medal delighted audiences worldwide.

‘Sivaji - The Boss’ in 3D is AVM's next release. Sivaji (2007) starring Superstar Rajinikanth has seen spectacular success not only in the traditional markets for Tamil films but also in the overseas centres. It was the first tamil film to have broken into the UK Top 10 charts. Released simultaneously in India, UK, Europe, USA, Canada, the Middle East, Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, Sivaji set new benchmarks for theatrical realizations in every market segment. AVM is proud to have produced the most number of Rajinikanth movies than any other production house and the highly successful ‘Sivaji’ in 3D will be Superstar’s first ever 3D film.
