Marc Andreessen is an American entrepreneur, investor, and software engineer. Andreessen is the co-author of Mosaic, the first widely used web browser; co-founder of Netscape Communications Corporation; and co-founder and general partner of the Silicon Valley venture capital firm, Andreessen Horowitz.
Netscape was acquired by AOL in 1999; Andreessen served as Chief Technology Officer at AOL until he left to form LoudCloud, a services-based web hosting company. LoudCloud changed its name to Opsware in 2003 and was purchased by Hewlett-Packard in 2007. Between 2005 and 2009, Marc Andreessen and business partner Ben Horowitz invested $4 million in 45 startups. In 2009, Andreessen and Horowitz founded Andreessen Horowitz.
Marc Andreessen is also co-founder of Ning, which was sold to Glam Media in 2011. As of June 2014, Andreessen sat on the boards of Facebook, eBay, Kno, Stanford Hospital, Bump Technologies, Oculus VR, TinyCo and Hewlett-Packard.
