Group Overview

Poabs Estate is a multi-crop plantation situated in Nelliyampathy hills in Chittur taluk, Palakkad District. The entire Nelliyampathy covering a vast tract of virgin forest is hilly area, with ideal weather and climatic condition, has made it suitable for development as a plantation. Except an orange farm owned by the Govt. of Kerala the rest of the area is owned by about 60 private planters.

The whole Nelliyampathy hills is known to be originally belonged to Vengunad Kovilakam of Kollengode, who has then leased out vast tracts of this virgin forest area to the Government. Similarly vast tracts of virgin forest in the Nelliyampathy hills were leased out in the year 1889 to two Britishers by name Mr. Holmes and Mr. Macanzey. Later on in 1896 they have sold the leasehold right over the land to one M/s Amalgamated Tea Estate Company Ltd; subsequently it came into the hands of Amalgamated Coffee Estate Pvt. Ltd., which was owned by Sri. Neelkanda Iyer. In his hands this estate was known as Seethargundu. Later on he sold this estate to various parties in different portions. In 1969 Mr. N. J. Joseph purchased one such portion, who in turn sold it in favour of Karuna Plantations Pvt. Ltd., and by transfer of shares in 1988, Poabs has got title and possession over the plantation.
