Group Overview

THE UK IT ASSOCIATION (UKITA) IS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT MEMBERSHIP ORGANISATION AND TRADE ASSOCIATION WITH A MAIN BOARD COMPOSED OF MEMBERS ELECTED BY THE MEMBERSHIP AS A WHOLE.

We are for the 98% of the IT and Tech companies in the UK with fewer that 250 employees - this is what the UK government calls 'Small and Medium Enterprises' or SME.

UKITA is run BY IT/Tech practitioners - we are not bureaucrats or career membership professionals. We are not just FOR the IT SME sector, WE ARE THE IT SME SECTOR.

In fact many are actually sole traders or independent consultants and the average size of a UK IT/Tech business is  actually FIVE people!

The government and media are seemingly fixated on 'Tech' by which they seem to mean no of the following categories:

  • The global corporate giants, usually US-based, who famously seek to avoid paying any tax to the UK exchequer but seem to be very influential on central government policy
  • High-growth startups which draw in funding which pays one or two people who build an online product derived from a similar idea to something that already exists and whose aim is primarily to SELL the company, often to an overseas giant, at the earlier possible moment which makes a few people rich but generates little employment or tax revenue for the UK
  • The large corporate UK and international IT companies which get involved in tax-payer funded projects for Central Government, with well-known results such as charging £70 for a power lead, running massively over budget and projects that are abandoned after having cost 4 times the original estimate
